What kind of functional food is proven to protect our hearts?

In my last post, I suggest that a truly cardioprotective bioactive must exert scientifically validated antioxidant activity. Is that all?


In addition to oxidative processes, scientists have also identified that vascular inflammation (or inflammation in the blood vessel) culminates in the atherosclerotic process1


Thus, it can deduce that a cardioprotective bioactive or functional food/ beverage should exert antioxidant or anti-inflammatory activities or both. 


The question next is which antioxidants and anti-inflammatories are capable of slowing down the atherosclerotic processes? 


There are so many functional and nutraceutical products claimed to exert antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. However, very few are scientifically validated to exhibit antioxidant or anti-inflammatory properties. 


In other words, are the claimed antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions verified by science? I will write more about scientific validation in my future posts.
