Sweeteners: A Brief Introduction

Sweetness is the most addictive of the five taste sensations. As implied, sweeteners are additives used in food to increase the intensity of the sweet taste sensation. I had written on natural sugar - the most common food sweeteners in my earlier post.

In addition to sugar, several sweeteners are approved in food by the Singapore Food Agency1. I would group them into natural and artificial sweeteners. Natural sweeteners are derived from nature, while men manufacture artificial ones. I bet you have seen some of them on the food labels but do not know that they are added as sweeteners.
