Reading Food Information Panel: Fat
The mainstream media have demonized fat in the past twenty years, attributing the consumption of fat to a whole phelora of diseases. In reality, a small amount of fat is an essential part of a healthy, balanced diet. Here are reasons why:
Fat is a source of essential fatty acids, which the body cannot make itself.
It is rich in energy - 1 gram provides 9kcal of energy compared with 4kcal for carbohydrate and protein.
Fat helps the body absorb fat- soluble vitamins, like vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E and vitamin K.
The main types of fat found in food are:
unsaturated fat - monounsaturated vs. polyunsaturated fat
Most fats and oils contain both saturated and unsaturated fats in different proportions. Some food contains trans fat.
In the next few blogs, I will talk about the different types of fat and how their consumption affects our health.
