Reading Food Information Panel: Fat

The mainstream media have demonized fat in the past twenty years, attributing the consumption of fat to a whole phelora of diseases. In reality, a small amount of fat is an essential part of a healthy, balanced diet. Here are reasons why:

  • Fat is a source of essential fatty acids, which the body cannot make itself. 

  • It is rich in energy - 1 gram provides 9kcal of energy compared with 4kcal for carbohydrate and protein.

  • Fat helps the body absorb fat- soluble vitamins, like vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E and vitamin K. 

 

The main types of fat found in food are:

  • saturated fat

  • unsaturated fat - monounsaturated vs. polyunsaturated fat

  • tran fat

 

Most fats and oils contain both saturated and unsaturated fats in different proportions. Some food contains trans fat.
