Prebiotics vs. Probiotics vs. Postbiotics
In my previous post, I talked about prebiotics. Prebiotics can be regarded as nutrients for our gut bacteria, and their subsequent degraded products may benefit our health1.
What exactly are the probiotics and postbiotics?
Probiotics are more commonly known to the consumers. They are the living bacterial cultures in fermented dairy products, like yoghurt2. Certain probiotic bacterial stains are clinically proven to promote healthy gut functions and increase immunity2.
Postbiotics are the latest craze. They are essentially the metabolic products of probiotics believed to exert the benefits of the probiotics3. This belief is supported by limited clinical evidence reporting the similar effects of probiotics and postbiotics3.
I hope that my explanation helps you to differentiate the three “biotics”.
