Mediterranean Diet & Physical Fitness
I had been writing about the health benefits of adopting the Mediterranean diet. There is one domain I have yet to write on the Mediterranean diet, the relationships between the Mediterranean diet and physical fitness.
A systematic review of 30 studies involving 36,807 individuals examined the associations between high (vs. low) Mediterranean diet adherence and physical fitness levels in adults.[1] The review concludes that high adherence to Mediterranean diet was associated with higher cardiorespiratory fitness, musculoskeletal fitness, and overall physical fitness than low adherence to Mediterranean diet.[1] This conclusion becomes more significant when physical fitness level is regarded as a crucial marker of health status throughout adulthood.
