Health Benefits of Stevia

Stevia is famous for sweetness due to the content of steviol. It is used as a natural, non-caloric sweetener in numerous food applications, replacing the traditional sugar and decreasing the caloric content of the resulting food product. A recent cell study may cast light on additional health benefits of stevia.[1]

Steviol decreased lipid accumulation and triglyceride content in human fat cells. It also improved glucose uptake in the fat cells. Steviol lowered the gene expression that mitigates insulin resistance in the human fat cells.

Though the results are encouraging, they may not be translated to in vivo conditions. In vivo studies are needed to verify the cell study results.
