Fiber Supplementation on Chronic Constipation

Chronic constipation is one of most common chronic digestive disorders. Not only does it make life miserable for the affected, its treatment is time-consuming and expensive. Increasing fiber intake may improve symptoms, although recommendations on type, dose and duration are unclear.

 

 

A recently published systematic review and meta-analysis of  sixteen randomized controlled trials investigated the effect of fiber supplementation on symptoms and quality of life in 1,251 adults with chronic constipation.[1] Fiber supplementation is effective in improving constipation.[1] Psyllium treatment with doses above ten g/d over at least four weeks appears optimal.[1]
