Fiber Supplementation on Chronic Constipation
Chronic constipation is one of most common chronic digestive disorders. Not only does it make life miserable for the affected, its treatment is time-consuming and expensive. Increasing fiber intake may improve symptoms, although recommendations on type, dose and duration are unclear.
A recently published systematic review and meta-analysis of sixteen randomized controlled trials investigated the effect of fiber supplementation on symptoms and quality of life in 1,251 adults with chronic constipation. Fiber supplementation is effective in improving constipation. Psyllium treatment with doses above ten g/d over at least four weeks appears optimal.
